Telling the stories that need to be told, one frame at a time.

Upstream Video Productions is a Seattle-based production company founded in 1980 by Sandra Johnson Osawa, a member of the Makah Tribe and the Writers Guild of America, and Yasu Osawa, a skilled cameraman, editor, graphic artist, and still photographer. Both began their filmmaking journey at the UCLA graduate film program, which accepted 16 minority students for the first time in the 1970's. They were determined to create stories of, for, and about their respective minority communities. Over three decades later, their portfolio reflects an impressive range of productions and services.

Production Services

Sandra and Yasu have produced a ten-part series on American Indian issues for NBC, five documentaries for PBS, and a one-hour television special on treaty rights called The Eighth Fire. They have also created more than 50 videos for museums, tribes, and organizations. Their work spans across a variety of formats and mediums, including logos, newsletters, brochures, posters, and still photography. Clients from different sectors rely on Upstream Video Productions for their experience, professionalism, and high-quality productions.

Films and Documentaries

Upstream Video Productions is dedicated to capturing and showcasing stories that matter. Their films and documentaries reflect their interest in American Indian political issues, contemporary images of Indian people, and exploring the lives of contemporary Indian artists. Some of their notable works include "Lighting the 7th Fire" on spearfishing rights in Wisconsin, "Usual and Accustomed Places" on treaty issues in the Northwest, portraits of jazz musician Jim Pepper, nationally known stand-up comedian Charlie Hill, and prima ballerina Maria Tallchief.

Sandra and Yasu are passionate about filmmaking and enjoy sharing their knowledge with aspiring storytellers. They are available for speaking engagements on college campuses and often premiere their new works in a college setting. Additionally, they conduct filmmaking workshops in various communities to empower the next generation of content creators.

Independent Productions and Collaboration

The duo plans and funds their own independent productions and work on at least 2-3 other videos a year with selected clients on a contract basis. They invite organizations and individuals to collaborate with them on projects that align with their mission and expertise.
